It’s a big step getting a house pet but we’ve got you covered
Thinking of getting a new puppy or rescuing a dog? There are so many reasons to get a dog but it is a big responsibility. They can be great for your kids and they are amazing if you live in a house by yourself because they are such good company and are always happy to see you. I have a little pug; he’s really not so little anymore but I remember the excitement of bringing him home and he loves having your attention but sleeps a lot too.
When you decide it’s time to get a dog there are a few things you need to consider.
What do I need to buy?
There a few things that you need to have ready before you bring your new puppy or dog home. Here is your shopping list.
- Water and food bowl
- A brush – you won’t believe how much hair some dogs can shed.
- Collar & harness/lead
- A bed – something that you can throw in the wash. Don’t buy an expensive one yet because they might rip it up.
- Non toxic toys
Will you be at home?
I would recommend that you are at home for the first few days of bringing your dog home. The dog is trying to adjust to a new house and new people. If it’s a puppy it probably needs to be toilet trained and you need to be around to teach it good habits. Once they get to know you and the house rules you are set up for life. Also you don’t want to come home to a chewed staircase or your favourite pair of shoes in ruins.
Kids responsibility
If you are buying the dog for your kids, make them responsible for it. If they are old enough to understand, it’s a great way to teach them about how to care for an animal. They can be in charge of changing their water and giving them food. Kids love brushing a dog, just make sure they are gentle with the animal. Before you get the dog explain their daily and weekly duties.
The first week
This is what I have learned to do when the dog arrives for the first time.
- Don’t let the animal upstairs, your shoes are too important.
- If you have floor length curtains, pick them up, it’s too hard to get the wee stains out.
- Don’t let the kids have the dog on the sofa or bed – the puppy gets too used to it.
- Ideally I would make a very comfortable space for the dog in the utility room or a space that very quiet at night time.
