Summer is here and that means good weather, long evenings and more time out and about, so who wants to spend hours indoors cleaning? Nobody! So we have put together a list of cleaning hacks to shave hours off your weekly cleaning session.

Make the bed

Each morning before you leave the house, try to take a few minutes to make your bed. A dressed bed can make the whole room look neat and tidy and you will be less inclined to leave clothes on it or crawl back into it for a little snooze.

Squeegee the shower

Invest a few euro in a squeegee and place it in your shower. Before you hop out of the shower run the squeegee over the door, this will help keep the glass clean, stop limescale building up and make the big clean less intensive.

Shoes off

Where possible try to make your house a no-shoe zone especially for kids. Just think about where you are walking every day and what you are walking in and then dragging back into your house!


Washing clothes is the most boring job that we all have to do so try to keep on top of the washing as it won’t disappear; it will just keep piling up. When you take your clothes off don’t be tempted to throw them on the chair or floor put them in the wash basket or fold them and put them in the wardrobe. Aim to put a wash on each day and fold the clothes when you take them off the clothes line or out of the dryer to try and cut down on the ironing.


Get into the habit of cleaning while you cook so that you don’t end up with a giant pile of dishes after dinner. Try to put items away when you’re finished and wash-up or load the dishwasher as you go, this will save you time after dinner. Once your dinner is ready rinse your utensils and soak your pots and pans as they will be much easier to clean afterwards. When you’re finished eating wipe down the counter tops and table to stop crumbs being falling on the floor and then being spread all over the house.

Night time scan

Before bedtime take 10 minutes to try and put everything back in its place. Get the whole family involved ask the kids to tidy their bedrooms and put their toys and clothes away. This is a great habit to get into and it is great to wake up to a clean and tidy house.
