Buildings should be insured for the full rebuilding cost of the property, not the purchase price. This includes labour, materials, site clearance and permanent structures such as garages, sheds and boundary walls. Rebuild calculators from the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland can help estimate this amount.
Contents insurance is optional but recommended once the home is furnished. It covers personal belongings such as furniture, appliances, clothing and electrical items against insured events.
Contents cover may extend to outbuildings such as garages or sheds, typically for personal items like DIY tools and materials, subject to policy terms and limits.
An excess is the amount you pay towards a claim. This amount is deducted from the final settlement figure if a claim is made.
Some insurers offer 1, 2 or 3-year home insurance policies, subject to underwriting criteria and policy conditions. If you would like more information, please ask our team of advisors.
