Help – How much Should I insure my house for?
Your house insurance premium is mainly based on the value you put on your buildings and your contents. This is why premiums can vary so much. Your buildings should be insured for the full Reinstatement/Rebuilding cost of your home, be careful to account for things like scaffolding/architects fees to cover a rebuild. The rebuild rates depend on the time and economic climate.
Your contents includes all household goods and personal effects including fixtures and fittings. It is often difficult to put a figure on this. To help you, click here for our Easy Estimator – You will be surprised how many things you haven’t accounted for!

Prevention is better than cure, Protect your Home
From Burglary
- Install motion sensor security lights in your front and back garden.
- Put some of your lights on timers to come on intermittently.
- Install a visible burglar alarm on the exterior of your home.
- Never leave your windows or doors unlocked.
- Don’t leave your car keys in sight.
- Lock the gates to your back garden.
- Lock away any valuables e.g bikes, garden furniture away at night.
- When going on holidays, ask a neighbour/family member to keep an eye on your home.
From the Elements
- If you are leaving your home for a length of time this winter – turn off water at the mains and ensure the pipes are drained.
- You should also ensure that the attic door (where fitted) is left open. This will help spread the heat throughout the entire house.
- Clean debris from your gutters from time to time.
- Check roof tiles and slates are secure.
- Check your aerial is properly secured.
- Remove dead/damaged branches from any trees which could damage your property in stormy weather.
- Store your garden furniture in a properly sealed shed/garage/conservatory.
- Make sure your front gate is properly locked.
- Make sure your pipes are properly insulated to avoid them freezing. Outside pipes should be fitted with insulating sleeves if exposed.
From Fire
- Smoke detectors should be installed on each level of your home and outside every sleeping area.
- Multi-purpose fire extinguishers (type ABC) should be kept in areas accessible to the kitchen, furnace, hot water heater, laundry room and garage. Keep at least one extinguisher on each floor of your home and clearly label each extinguisher with the type of fire it is designed to extinguish.
- Ensure all windows and doors can be unlocked and every household member is aware of where keys are kept.
- Clean your chimney regularly.
- Always use a fire screen.
- The last person to bed should ensure all appliances are switched off.
- Establish an escape plan and predetermine what you will need to aid your escape e.g fire blankets, rope ladders etc.
- Pay particular car to Christmas decorations, candles, portable radiators.
